Handicap 5K race 1 – 2nd April 2019

On Tuesday 2nd April 2019 a record number of Stevenage Striders turned up for the first club handicap 5K of 2019. Conditions were good with mild temperatures; it was dry and with very little breeze.

Fifty-one Striders took on the course. In a handicap format each runner is given a target time based on their current form. The runners start based on their target times with the slower runners going off first. If each runner runs to their target time then all runners would finish together! The winner of the race is the runner who beats their target time by the biggest margin.

The winner of the race was Wayne Kelly, who beat his target time by a massive 6 minutes 44 seconds in a personal best. Second, and first lady home was the ever-improving Charlotte Leigh in a personal best of 34:35. The quickest time set by a man was Danik Bates finishing in 21:01 and the quickest lady was Vicky McIver in 22:17. Other Striders who clocked personal bests included Stuart Cuzner, Phil Deaves, Greg Bradbury, Vicky McIver, Kirsten Jarvis and Sarah Allen.

The club hold a six-race series with a race each month in 2019. Runners receive a score based on their finishing position in each race. Their overall score is based on their best three finishing positions from the six races.
